Position: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Volunteer
Positions Available: 4, starting May 3, 2010
Commitment: 6 months minimum
Living Stipend: $20/day
Location: Alpine, AZ
Housing: Provided (trailers in forest service compound)
Major Duties: Volunteer will perform a variety of tasks in support of the reintroduction project. Duties may include monitoring of wolf locations, movements(using track identification and scat ID), and activities through radio-telemetry(by vehicle, foot or plane using receivers and H-antenna to pick up radio signals, then take compass direction and GPS location of each wolf location). Backcountry travel by backpacking, horseback riding, and camping for extended periods of time in remote areas to monitor wolves(taking GPS locations, behavioral observations) may be involved. Assist biologists with various wolf management and research activities such as capture(using leg-hold traps, or darting) and radio collaring of wolves(including medical workups, taking blood and measurements, give vaccinations), and monitoring of den and rendezvous site activity(find on foot, take GPS locations, make behavioral observations). Assists project biologists with distributing current wolf information(letters with details on wolf program, how to act in wolf territories) to ranchers, campers, hunters, and other persons using the Recovery area. Volunteer will also assist project biologists with various office tasks such as data entry(putting location data in computer database) and equipment maintenance(of vehicles, and traps).
Qualifications: The applicant should be in excellent physical health. He/she must be able to work independently and with a team, often in remote areas under extreme environmental conditions. Applicants with or working towards a Bachelors degree in wildlife biology, experience with backcountry map and compass use, ranching, hunting, trapping experience is helpful, remote backcountry hiking and camping, radio telemetry(ground and air), 4WD vehicles, and good communication skills are preferred.
