Mexican wolves need your support now

none

Recently, opponents of Mexican gray wolves have ramped up their efforts to turn New Mexico residents against the imperiled wolf through fear mongering billboards, advertisements, and statements in the press.

Elected officials in New Mexico need to hear from Mexican wolf supporters.

Please take a few minutes and call, email, or write the officials below, and send a letter to the editor of the Albuquerque Journal.

When calling, just say something like this:

Please let [name of elected official] know that I strongly support Mexican gray wolf recovery and think that agency managers need to give wolves more protection given that there are just 52 wolves left in the wild. Please tell [name of elected official] to ignore the fear mongering of minority anti-wolf special interests and instead focus on solutions that allow us to achieve true recovery for imperiled Mexican wolves on our public lands.

Governor Bill Richardson: (505) 476-2200

Senator Jeff Bingaman: 202-224-5521

Senator Tom Udall: 202-224-6621

Congressman Martin Heinrich: 202-225-6316

Congressman Harry Teague: 202-225-2365

Congressman Ben Ray Lujan, Jr.: 202-225-6190

Use these talking points for emails or letters to elected officials and Letters to the Editor:

* Recently, opponents of Mexican gray wolves have resorted to fear mongering in an effort to turn New Mexico residents against the imperiled wolf.

* Only 52 Mexican wolves exist in the wild making it the most imperiled mammal in North America.  A recent poll found that 69% of New Mexicans support wolf recovery on our public lands.

* The “backyard” referred to by wolf opponents is our public lands—everyone’s backyard—and the historic homelands of Mexican wolves.

* I want Mexican wolves in my public backyard wild lands, where I enjoy camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, and the thrill of hearing a wolf howl.

* Wolves play an important role in maintaining the balance and health of nature.

* Please don’t be swayed by misinformed fear mongering by a special interest minority.

* Please support the efforts of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and New Mexico Department of Game and Fish to restore wild Mexican wolves to our public lands.
