Event: Living Large: Wolves, Bears, Cougars and Humans in North America

The Kellogg Conference Center at Gallaudet University, Washington, DC

Large carnivores now live in heterogeneous and fragmented landscapes that differ markedly from the ones in which they evolved, and they face significant threats to their survival. This conference seeks to cultivate the best ideas from animal welfare, conservation biology, public policy, conflict resolution, law and other disciplines to help secure the future of these iconic creatures.

Speakers and other conference participants will discuss biological, practical, legal, and institutional challenges and opportunities for living with these carnivores in the 21st century.

Session topics include:

  • Past, Present and Future:  A vision for protecting/conserving the large predators
  • Socio-political issues and the protection of large predators
  • Wildlife management approaches:  the classic North American approach and alternative strategies
  • Compassionate conservation and rewilding are more than “welfarism gone wild”.  The importance of individual lives.
  • Human Impacts on large predators
  • Attitudes and Public Policy
  • The future for large predators; spatial organization and social interaction, ethics, legalities and the next 50 years
  • Current policies vs. future policies

The symposium is being hosted by The Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy.

Registration Information will be available soon! Check here.
