Good News Update!

Anti-wolf bill fails to pass NM Legislature

none

We're pleased to announce that HJM 48, a NM state legislature memorial aimed at smearing the Mexican wolf program, didn't even make it out of the state House of Representatives this session. While a watered-down version passed the House Energy and Natural Resources Committee (6-4), when the memorial reached the House Floor, Rep. Brian Egolf requested that it be re-assigned to the House Health & Government affairs committee, where it sat until the session closed at noon Thursday. Hurray!

Reps. Jeff Steinborn, Brian Egolf, Mimi Stewart, James Roger Madalena, Ben Rodefer, and Antonio Lujan deserve a long, deep howl for knowing that this memorial would be a blow to the Mexican wolves at a time when there are just 15 wolves left in New Mexico's wilds. Feel free to send them an email thanking them for helping to defeat this memorial.

The same sponsor of the anti-wolf memorial also introduced a bill earlier in the session, that similarly didn’t pass, that would have prohibited New Mexico Department of Game and Fish from participating in the reintroduction program.

A terrific team of conservation groups and dedicated citizens - like you - called and emailed legislators, attended committee hearings, and otherwise fought these anti-wolf measures for an outcome we can be proud of!

Many thanks to all who took action for our lobos!
